Phonics
Christ Church develops your child’s ability to communicate effectively through writing and speech. Phonics is crucial step toward achieving that goal: Government research shows that “when Phonics is taught in a structured way… it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read”.
As outlined by Gov.uk, Phonics teaches children how to:
- Recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes
- Identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make (such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’)
- Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word
To learn more about the teaching of Phonics at Christ Church, you can download a copy of our presentation to parents and carers that took place in February 2016. This explains the stages of phonetic development and some technical terms.
